How to Layer a Name Necklace with Your Everyday Jewelry

A name necklace already carries a personal detail. When you layer it, give that detail room to be seen. Start with one necklace you love and add a second only if the lengths and shapes work comfortably together.

Start with the chain lengths you have

Lay your necklaces flat and compare their chain lengths, excluding any hanging pendant. Then try the shorter and longer settings with the neckline you plan to wear. A chain that sits neatly above another on one person may sit differently on you.

Auriani's Custom Name Necklace and Heart Name Necklace adjust from 16 to 18 inches. The Birth Flower Name Necklace adjusts from 18 to 20 inches. These ranges give you settings to compare, but overlap at 18 inches: two different designs do not automatically create two distinct layers.

Leave room for the lettering

Look at the bottom of each pendant as well as the chain. A vertical name or flower design takes up space below the chain; a script name has a different outline. Try one shorter setting and one longer setting, then move naturally to see whether the pieces overlap.

If your name is difficult to read, simplify the combination. You could wear the name necklace with a plain chain you already own, or let it stand alone with earrings. You do not need several personalized pendants to make a look feel personal.

Choose a finish around your everyday pieces

Matching finishes is one way to keep attention on the shapes and lettering. Mixing silver-tone and gold-tone pieces can also work if you enjoy the contrast. Try the combination with the jewelry you reach for most often.

The current Auriani options are polished stainless steel and an 18K yellow gold finish. The steel option is not sterling silver, and the gold finish is not solid gold. Choose by the stated material and finish, not by the color alone.

Make comfort part of the styling

Check the clasps, neckline and pendant positions before heading out. Separate chains can still cross or tangle as you move; no combination here is sold as tangle-free. If the pieces keep catching, try fewer layers or wear them separately.

After wearing, store each necklace separately with its chain laid out. Remove it before bathing or swimming, and keep it away from perfume and lotions. Our necklace length and care guide brings together the exact measurements and care instructions.

Build around what feels like you

Choose the personal detail first: your name, a heart or a birth flower. Compare the design with a necklace you already wear before buying another layer. Each Auriani necklace is sold as a separate piece; compatible extenders and interchangeable charms are not currently confirmed options.
